FediCamp 2024

It's that time again. FediCamp is back for its third edition!

After successfully organizing the very nice, relaxed, and interesting FediCamp in the years 2022 and 2023, we're doing it again this year.

We come together to meet people in person whom we've known from the Fediverse for a long time. At the same time, we give presentations, sit around the campfire, and have a good time together. The event is close to chaos, everyone contributes, and we make it into something we all enjoy. At the same time, the respective rules apply - be excellent to each other!

The Fediverse is a concept that encompasses a variety of decentralized social networks connected to each other. It is based on open protocols like ActivityPub, enabling different platforms to communicate with each other. Users can interact, share content, and connect on various platforms within this network, such as Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed, and others. The Fediverse promotes individual control over data and privacy protection since users have the freedom to run their own servers or choose platforms that suit their needs. It offers an alternative, non-commercial, and democratic way of social networking, where users retain control over their online identity.

Learning and gossiping, chilling and grilling.

The camp is a relaxed affair for all individuals connected to the Fediverse, decentralized networking, and life in general. There will be plenty of options for workshops, goofing around, fun, diligence, and laziness, and of course, getting to know each other. The area is very rural and quiet, inviting relaxation in good company. Finally, some reasonable people!

Interaction and communication are highly valued, technical topics, etc., will be presented in informal lectures and workshops.

The nearby nuclear facilities (keyword Gorleben) and the sites of resistance against them can be visited together, while there will also be first-hand information on the subject.

Costs

We estimate costs to be around €100 per person.

This includes a campsite including parking, sanitary facilities, and electricity, a common lounge and event space, a shared kitchenette, and a communal endless breakfast. We will pay for the campsite collectively. Any remaining money will be used for further communal meals during the camp.

There is no organizer in the sense that we offer a service for a fee. Each participant is privately on the site, a corresponding usage contract is concluded directly between the participant and Gasthaus Wiese. For organizational reasons, we pay the fee collectively and collect the money accordingly. This is the only way to achieve the good price.

In addition to the campsite, rooms and pensions are also available in the nearby area.

Registration

If you are arriving with children, please select adult tickets first. In the next step, you will have the option to select free children's tickets.

Please note that all individuals on the premises need a valid ticket.

Please provide your name/nickname and your Fediverse handle so we can reach you. Also, be sure to provide a valid email address so the ticket can be sent.

Please note that emails to Gmail addresses are often rejected by Google. Emails and tickets to Gmail addresses may not be delivered.

The Camp 2023 - Report

General

The 2023 camp went similarly to the previous year. Since the camp was now being held for the second time, we were able to implement and expand upon some experiences from the previous year. Especially, we had a good internet connection and rented the event hall. This provided ample space for workshops and group activities throughout the day.

The campfire was also intensified. This year we had specifically ordered wood for our consumption and did not have to gather it anew every day.

In 2023, there were more participants on the campsite than the previous year. Many workshops and presentations took place, including learning about the functioning of the Fediverse through a board game, soldering and programming workshops, discussions about moderation and instances, how to detect advertising tracking, and learning about many different software solutions. We cooked together, had fun and sang around the campfire. Of course, there were also trips to other interesting places nearby, and we played pen&paper, sat in the sun, and everyone had fun getting to know each other.

Presentations and Workshops

This year, we only partially recorded presentations, at least not publicly. Additional information about presentations and content may be available soon.

Recording and publishing are planned for next year.

The Camp 2022 - Report

The idea for the Fedicamp originally was as follows: Two people who met on Mastodon decided to meet up for cooking together. That was basically it.

However, as this idea spread, it turned into a gathering of 25 people from the Fediverse, who came from all over Germany, some even from France, to meet at Gasthaus Wiese in the beautiful Wendland. Why Gasthaus Wiese?

In the Wendland (part of the district officially known as "Lüchow-Dannenberg"), lies the town of Gorleben, known for its interim nuclear waste storage facility, about five kilometers away from Gedelitz. Everyone associates Gorleben with the anti-nuclear power resistance, starting in the 1980s. To this day, the Wendland is characterized by this movement, with old citizen initiatives largely still active, the population mostly leaning towards green ideologies, and yellow crosses, symbols of protest, visible everywhere. Gasthaus Wiese was already one of the centers of resistance optimal conditions for a meeting of leftists, environmentalists, nerds, politically engaged individuals, journalists, and various mixtures thereof from a decentralized network, to ponder subversive thoughts.

"Decentralized" was essentially the entire organization of this Fedicamp. Tasks were divided, some planned, some entirely improvised. Managing costs, food supply, infrastructure (electricity and Wi-Fi), setting up shading options, providing firewood for the nightly campfire all of this was done without central leadership. Someone always stepped up to take on these tasks. It was demonstrated here that this can work on a small scale. However, there is, of course, room for improvement here and there. This report is also a compilation of various inspirations from different participants. There is no single author in that sense - or summed up for the whole camp: "Chaos meets structure and everything comes together as a whole."

Daily Schedule

Most participants camped on the premises of Gasthaus Wiese. The area is very large and could easily accommodate ten times the number of campers, with indoor and outdoor showers/WCs available. Due to the high-temperature weather conditions, we decided to rent the kitchen on the premises. In hindsight, a very good idea, as it provided us with plenty of workspace, refrigerators, and, most importantly, covered space for storing electronics.

The days generally consisted of:

Waking up, getting into the day, coffee supply, tea, and breakfast, saying good morning to each other

Performing a coronavirus test during the day. Each participant of the Fedicamp was tested once a day. The entire group agreed to this approach beforehand. The (highest possible) safety achieved through this was noticeable every day.

Occasional outings by individual participants or as a group (bike tour to Höhbeck, the highest elevation in the area, as part of a presentation on the interim storage facility, as part of the presentation of a CO2 engine near Gartow, an herb hike…)

Presentations by individual participants on various IT, climate, and social topics

Preparations for food intake and campfire

Searching for mobile network reception… ;-)

A lot of communication between participants. It was interesting to see that the style of communication we know from the Fediverse actually reflects in-person conversations. None of us at any point felt like we were facing someone who was different in real life than on the Fediverse. On a personal level, much was learned, many topics from the relevant areas were discussed, and here and there, it felt like a connection beyond the Fediverse could be established.

Evening gatherings around the campfire, under the influence of (very modest amounts of) beer, guitar strumming, marshmallows, a few grilled items, conversations...

Hygiene Measures

Although there are no longer any legal measures regarding the Corona pandemic, it is still important to observe certain guidelines to ensure the health and safety of everyone. Here are some measures you should consider:

Check your health before the camp. If you have symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, please stay home.

Greet each other without physical contact, such as shaking hands or hugging.

Pay attention to good hand hygiene and wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Maintain an appropriate distance from other participants, especially in situations where you are close together.

Voluntarily wear a mask, especially in situations where distancing cannot be maintained, such as during shared activities or in confined spaces.

Avoid sharing personal items such as cutlery, glasses, or bottles. Instead, use individual utensils and containers.

Stay vigilant and watch for possible symptoms during the camp. If you develop symptoms of illness, please inform the contact persons immediately so that appropriate precautions can be taken.

Do you want to livestream?

KABI Fancy Media offers an RTMP endpoint for streaming via Owncast. This works with all common streaming cameras as well as OBS. If you already have your own streaming service, still consult with the technical team so that appropriate domain records (stream1234.fedi.camp) can be set.

Cyber Emergency Response Team

Want to help in the CERT? Feel free to email us.
You can reach the CERT via chat on the website, via Matrix, and by phone. The respective numbers will be posted on-site. Also nearby the camp on 149.050.0 MHz (Freenet license-free). Check back here for updates often!
